Pre-Pointe Assessments at Ballarat Dance Clinic

If your child is a ballet dancer and almost ready to commence pointe, the team at Ballarat Dance Clinic will complete a Pre-Pointe assessment to ensure that your child has the right strength, conditioning and technique to safely progress to pointe.

These evidenced based assessments are undertaken by one of our highly experienced Podiatrists. Our Pre-Pointe Assessment at Ballarat Dance Clinic ensures you dance confidently with correct technique, reducing the risk of injuries. Make sure your child is ready to step into their pointe shoes with assurance and grace.

What happens in a Pre-Pointe assessment?

We like to see dancers 6-12 months prior to their expected progression onto pointe, to determine what level of strengthening and technique work is required in the months prior to commencing pointe.

In the initial appointment our podiatrist will work through a range of comprehensive functional and physical assessments as well as observing a range of ballet steps and barre work. This will give our podiatrist an idea of your pointe range, turnout range, core strength and control, leg strength and stability as well as intrinsic foot control.

In our session we also look for any structural or functional variances in the foot and ankle that may predispose you to injury. Small modifications in ballet technique and/or footwear can be made to prevent injuries in the future. You will then be given a range of exercises to help with your pre-point training and will be reviewed accordingly over the following months.

We work alongside your ballet teacher to ensure the best outcomes are reached for our young dancers.

What to bring?

We ask that you wear a leotard with convertible tights as the majority of our assessments will be conducted barefoot.

Bring along your ballet shoes and school shoes/runners so we can also assess your gait in day to day footwear.

How Can We Help?

At Ballarat Podiatry, our role as podiatrists is to assess dancers comprehensively, taking into account various factors to determine their readiness for pointe work. We consider the dancer's overall physical condition, including their foot health, strength, and flexibility.
